Smethwick, a suburb of Birmingham, England, is “…a diverse and deprived mission field. If God shows his power and love to the people of Smethwick then I believe it will have an impact far beyond our local area,” said Gareth Brown, the local community worker with Raglan Road Church.
When Gareth was asked what kind of workers were needed he replied, “We need workers prepared to practically serve the deprived neighbourhood where the church is based. The team will need to be more skilled in building “one-to-one” relationships than in the more traditional evangelist abilities. Good interpersonal skills and ability to be part of a team would be essential.” The team will have a varied programme of involvement in Shireland School mentoring, children's work, youth outreaches, community visitation, practical help to people in the community, a Pop in Café, a Sports Zone as well as some work among the elderly.
There has been a Community Outreach Team in Smethwick since September 2005. The special skill training you will receive will be in Kids' work, Asian work, Gospel Illustrations and basic Apologetics. There will also be coaching in youth work.
