The Noor Project Team in the eastern suburb of Alum Rock, Birmingham want to provide community services and a Christian witness to a predominantly south Asian Muslim population (86%). Few British people remain in the area; the largest grouping of those being Irish Catholic settlers.
Cicel and Elena Benjamin have a tremendous vision and commitment to reach Alum Rock for Christ. They prayed in the area for two years before a door opened wide. In answer to prayer, OM UK was offered the building of a declining church in this area to use as a place for ministry.
The Alum Rock church is situated opposite the local primary school in an area 96% South Asian Muslim. In the summer of 2005 a Faroese team began low-key outreach through face painting, balloon modelling and an international night at Alum Rock. The reception from the local community was surprisingly warm.
Since then there has been an Alum Rock Community Outreach team that has pioneered a girls' club on Saturday mornings, a boys' club on Friday evenings, a survey of the area, door to door visiting with the Jesus DVD project. In the pipeline for 2007 are English classes for ladies and for men.
God is blessing Christian presence in the locality – Muslim leaders brought a thankyou card to the church one Sunday morning in 2006 in thanks for a letter of solidarity and condolence written by the team after the earthquake in Pakistan and delivered to 500 homes.
